Hydronic Snow Melt Systems
Say Goodbye to Shovels
Chicago’s winter climate can be threatening and dangerous making it difficult to ensure safety at your home and business. With the accumulation of snow and ice on sidewalks and driveways, it becomes risky for those entering or leaving.
Tired of getting stuck in your own driveway? Are your clients at risk every time there is snow or ice on the sidewalks, stairs or ramps? Maybe you are just fed up with the dusk and dawn patrol with your snow shovel. Retire your snow shovel, set your mind at ease and relax when you see the snow and ice melting all from the indoor comfort of your home or business.
There is an alternative to constant shoveling, plowing and de-icing.
Some homeowners and businesses are keeping their concrete driveways and other exterior sidewalks maintenance free by installing hydronic ice and snow melt systems.
Not only do these in-slab hydronic snowmelt systems eliminate plowing, backbreaking shoveling, and icy spills, they add value to your property and increase the life of your concrete. Hydronic snowmelt systems prevent potential damage to concrete and the landscape that surrounds it, from corrosive chemicals, snow removal equipment and shovels.
How Hydronic Snow Melt Systems Work
A hydronic snow melt system installed by Air-ease Heating & Cooling, uses closed-loop tubing made of flexible polymer (typically known as PEX) embedded in the concrete to transfer its heat energy to the slab. This tubing circulates a mixture of hot water and glycol (antifreeze). The tubing is designed to have a long service life. It resists chemicals and corrosion and does not become soft at high operating temperatures or brittle at low outdoor temperatures.
The fluid is warmed to temperatures sufficient for snow melting with the use of a boiler. This system also requires a set of sensors to detect outside air temperature and moisture. These sensors will communicate with the boiler to determine if the snowmelt system needs to be turned on. Automatic controls can be installed to activate when snow starts and shut off when the surface is dry. Snow melting technology is designed to conveniently and automatically eliminate snow and ice day and night, so you don’t have to. Manual controls allow activation when a storm is in the forecast, to preheat the area or when blown or melting snow runs across the cleared area and the sensor doesn’t read it.
With a hydronic snow melt system installed by Air-ease Heating & Cooling, you will experience the luxury of not having to shovel snow or hire a snow removal company to clear your sidewalks and driveways. You can stay comfortable inside and let the snow melt system do the work for you.
